Just outside the town walls, in the centre of one of Italy’s smallest viticultural
zones, stands a beautiful veranda and behind it, a winery that over the years
has grown along with the vineyards surrounding it. The wines produced are
many, all certified, and each detail is attended to with meticulous attention.
Since the beginning, it has always been our pleasure to invite visitors to
personally see the production and aging process because there is no better
form of promotion; we are pleased to say that within the company there are
no closed doors. The visit covers every aspect and phase of vinification,
from machinery using the latest technology to impressive rooms full of casks
and barriques. A long hallway leads to the “vault”: the historical archives are
the company’s pride and joy, where old vintages of the great reserve wines
lay resting.
A place where the labels tell the story of this winery, the wines
and all the company’s undertakings; and where it is natural to feel awe and
fascination. After the visit, a wine tasting, held just next door at the wine shop, equipped
for tastings and wine courses.
At the winery many of the employees are descendents of the first employees
that embarked upon this adventure with the founder. A bond that continues
across the generations and involves the community of Torgiano: and it comes
as no surprise that the municipality in turn has decided to name the road that
runs in front of the winery in honour of Giorgio Lungarotti.
In Turrita, on a hill at the centre of one of the most beautiful areas of the
Montefalco zone, with a 360° view over the valley and the hillsides all around,
the winery is completely surrounded by vineyards. It’s just a short walk from
the vineyard to the cellar: the ideal location. The underground cellar was built
with innovative, modern criteria: grapes arrive at ground floor and travel to the
lower fermentation tanks by the principle of gravity. Being completely underground, the technical rooms are insulated by the earth, with a natural and
constant temperature control that is good for the wines and for saving energy.
Production at this facility is limited to a few classic wines of the area’s
main varietal, Sagrantino. Upon entering the villa with its 17th-century
architecture, we enter a “salone delle feste”, a large hall for parties, receptions and corporate entertaining. Completing the reception area are a large
fountain with its gentle murmur and a spacious tasting room. Surrounding
the property are vineyards, rosebushes and pomegranate trees.
