The range of wines is articulated, and has its origins in the vineyard, whose diversity in terms of soil composition and microclimate transmits precise characteristics,
subsequently strengthened by the work of man.
In Torgiano the properties are consolidated in
order to have unified vineyards. Although there are a number of micro-zones
within these, 250 are the hectares of vines owned by Lungarotti, in addition to
others on lease or controlled. The variety of pedo-climatic situations has inspired
the choice of varietals and rootstock, with a slight predominance of red grapes
with respect to the whites: Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,
Pinot Nero, Colorino and Syrah are the most common red varietals; Trebbiano, Grechetto, Vermentino,
Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio are the whites. According to a zoning
programme that was ahead of its time, Giorgio Lungarotti began to experiment
as early as the 1960’s, by planting white varietals with
great character on the lower slopes along the Tiber river valley, while the hillsides
are reserved for the red varietals. The vineyards continue up the hillside to 300
metres along the ridge running from Torgiano to Brufa, the most prized area for
vine cultivation: this habitat is absolutely ideal for the vines that produce the company “crus”. The mid- to lower hillsides are located in fresher and deeper soils
and produce grapes destined for our younger and more fragrant wines.
Our mission does not end in Torgiano but looks at Umbria as a whole. The
great diversity, even of such a small region, is stimulating: so we have taken
the challenge, expanding from Torgiano to the area of Montefalco. Here, in
Turrita, we have identified a property whose exposure and soil type perfectly
satisfy our new goals and our unwavering ideals. At an altitude of almost 400
metres above sea level we have planted 20 hectares of Sagrantino, Sangiovese and Merlot in vineyards that converge concentrically towards the winery.
Hills that alternate the colours of the vineyard with the silver-green of olive
trees: landscapes and colours that fascinated visitors travelling through
Italy on the Grand Tour some centuries ago. Even today, tourists, writers and journalists visiting Torgiano and Montefalco remark on the intense
impressions created by the pairing of vines and olives, Umbria’s treasured
products. Here the olive tree has grown forever, with its traditional varietals,
Frantoio, Leccino and Moraiolo. In the past, the cultivation was mixed with
other crops; now it is specialized, with “cone” pruning for the intensive cultivation or “vase” pruning along the terraces of the Brufa hillside - optimizing
the techniques with respect to the ecosystem. The final product, extracted
using advanced technology, is an extremely high-quality product.
