Wine becomes Culture

A welcoming smile, intense eyes that look far into the future and her elegant manner are what make Maria Grazia Marchetti Lungarotti a striking woman. However, it is her erudition, her passion for art and archeology and her researcher’s rigour which have been the base of her work in curating the museum hub in Torgiano and managing the Lungarotti Foundation.

Art historian, archivist, indefatigable and eclectic player on the cultural scene of Umbria, Maria Grazia Marchetti Lungarotti lives and works between Perugia and Torgiano where in the early 1970’s with the creation of the Wine Museum, she laid the foundation for the creation of a museum hub that is unique in its theme and museographical criteria; this first museum was then consolidated by the constitution of the Lungarotti Foundation in 1987 and the more recent opening of the Olive and Oil Museum. The Foundation is specialized in promoting and enhancing Italy’s agricultural heritage in the cultural sphere.

She has written numerous books and curated exhibits and conferences; in addition she is among the founding members of the Italian chapter of ICOM (Unesco’s International Council of Museums) of AIMA (Italian agricultural museums association) as well as of Museimpresa association and of the Italian Wine Tourism Movement.

Among the many awards received by Maria Grazia are the acknowledgement of Benemerito for her activities over the years in favour of Italy’s cultural heritage (1995), the title of Commendatore dell’Ordine al merito della Repubblica italiana (2001), the title of Cavaliere di Gran Croce dell’Ordine al merito della Repubblica italiana, the highest honour granted by the President of the Italian Republic (2011).

Just to name a few more honours, in 2009 the Foreign Press Association in Rome awarded her for her activities in promoting and supporting the culture of wine in Italy. In 2010 the prestigious “Premio Marisa Bellisario” was awarded to Maria Grazia for the expansion of the “Made in Italy” culture worldwide.
